The Hemlock Middle School Fly Fishing Club was started in January of 2023 at the behest of Bob Paris and Laurie Seibert. At the time, Bob was running a fly fishing club at Hemlock High School and Laurie was focused on increasing fly fishing education for youth. Knowing I was an avid fly fisher, Bob asked if I would be willing to start up a club at the middle school. After checking with the Mrs. to ensure I wouldn’t be missed if I came home a little later a couple of nights a week, I said yes.

The club is focused on teaching students a general overview of fly fishing, casting, fly tying, knot tying, and aquatic food webs. The club also allows students to make new friends and learn new skills. The club meets once or twice a month after school depending on the student and school schedule.
Our club has been fortunate to have assistance from members of the Mershon-Neumann Heritage Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Leon P. Martuch Chapter of Trout Unlimited help out at the meetings. We’ve also had employees from Scientific Anglers and Little Forks Outfitters assist group members with their learning.

Several club members have attended the Michigan Trout Unlimited Youth Conservation and Trout Camp. This camp helped them build on their skills and gain a better appreciation of our coldwater resources here in Michigan. They all came back with excited tales to tell and thoroughly enjoyed their experiences.
