Conservation Alert from the Great Lakes Council

You must register to attend- and you must attend if you want to learn what dam removal means to you.

Consumers Energy will be hosting a statewide webinar concerning the future of its 13 hydroelectric dams across the state including Hodenpyl and Tippy on the Big Manistee, six dams on the Au Sable, three on the Muskegon River, and Webber and Calkins Bridge dams.

Consumers is seeking feedback on the long-term future of these dams, many of which violate state water standards and degrade the rivers’ fisheries. Consumers has determined that it wants to divest itself of the dams as they are no longer cost-effective and, in fact, cost more to maintain than Consumers gains from the energy they generate.

It’s important that the voices of fly anglers from across Michigan have their voices heard in these deliberations. Consumers is hosting a Webinar on November 16, 2023 at 1:00 pm ET. We encourage each of you to attend and express your opinion. To participate, click https://pscinc.co/ce-webinars/ and you will be directed to the webinar.

The Great Lakes Council is a founding member of the Michigan Hydrorelicensing Coalition (MHRC), whose mission is to ensure hydroelectric facilities are not negatively impacting the watersheds they are built on. The Council will remain engaged in these deliberations through its membership in the MHRC.
